Command Hooks vs Tension Rods: What Works Better for Renters?

GuideNovember 20, 2023

Every renter has a drawer full of Command strips and a closet full of tension rods. But knowing which tool to use for which job is the key to preventing crashes in the middle of the night.

Adhesive Hooks (Command)

Pros: Invisible, versatile, works on most flat walls.
Cons: Can fail in humidity; potential paint damage if removed incorrectly.
Best For: Art, keys, lightweight bags, kitchen utensils.

Tension Rods

Pros: Holds heavier weight; mechanically simple; zero chemical residue.
Cons: Requires two parallel solid surfaces; ugly if exposed.
Best For: Curtains, shower caddies, under-sink hanging, closet dividers.

The Verdict

Use tension rods for "structural" storage (holding bottles, curtains, clothes). Use adhesive hooks for "access" storage (items you grab and go). Never trust an adhesive hook with anything breakable or heavier than 5 lbs unless it is rated for it.
